Pacific Regional Strategy on HIV and Other Sexually Transmissible Infections

The Pacific region has been ground-breaking in its work to develop and implement a regional strategy that addresses HIV. Coordinated by SPC, the strategy guides Pacific Island Countries in their work to prevent rates of HIV escalating.

Across the Pacific, 98.8% of HIV infections are associated with sexual intercourse, pregnancy, breastfeeding or childbirth. This is one of the reasons that Family Planning International has been advocating that the strategy focus more broadly on sexual and reproductive health.

The new draft strategy for 2009-2013 has included a focus on other sexually transmissible infections, as well as HIV. This is a great step forward welcomed by Family Planning International. We will continue to monitor and assist in implementing the strategy
