Men Improving Sexual Health in Malaita (MISHIM)

Recorded levels of HIV in the Solomon Islands are low, with a total of 15 HIV infections reported at the end of 2010. However, the Ministry of Health cautions that it is likely that the small number of reported cases reflects an under reporting and variability in terms of access and capacity for HIV testing and diagnosis.

The Solomon Islands has:

  • a population highly vulnerable to HIV;
  • high levels of STIs;
  • low use of condoms;
  • high fertility rate and high levels of teenage pregnancy;
  • high levels of violence against women.

Family Planning International (FPI) recognises the vital role that men play in reproductive and sexual health. Educating and encouraging men to be more responsible and supportive partners enhances their health and well-being, as well as the health and well-being of their partners.

FPI is working in partnership with Solomon Islands Planned Parenthood Association (SIPPA) on the MISHIM project, funded by the Pacific Islands HIV and STI Response Fund (supported by the New Zealand Aid Programme and AusAID).

The MISHIM project provides clinical and education services to men and boys on how HIV and STIs are transmitted and what behaviours could place them at risk of becoming infected.

A male nurse, based at the SIPPA clinic in Auki on the island of Malaita is providing clinical and education services to men in Auki and the surrounding areas, which currently are underserviced.
